Über die Pflanze
Ein immergrüner Strauch oder Liane, die in Primär- und Sekundärwäldern sowie an Flussufern wächst. Die Pflanze hat wechselständige, einfache, elliptische bis spießförmige Blätter, die 5–15 cm lang sind und glänzend dunkelgrün sind. Sie bildet einhäusige Blüten in achselständigen oder endständigen Rispen mit grünem Kelchblatt und weißlich-gelbem Kronblatt mit burgunderfarbenen Flecken. Die Frucht ist eine kugelige, rote oder grau gefleckte Beere (3,5–5 cm Durchmesser) mit vielen Samen.
Wirkung
Brazzein als Protein, das bis zu 500-mal süßer als Saccharose ist.
Anwendung
Könnte als kalorienarmer Süßstoff genutzt werden, ist aber noch nicht in der EU oder den USA zugelassen.
Erkennungsmerkmale
Einzigartige Blüten mit grünem Kelchblatt, weißen oder gelblichen Kronblättern und burgunderfarbenen Flecken. Kugelige rote oder grau gefleckte Beeren.
